Letter of the Week!

Picture
We will continue with our letter of the week curriculum. Each week we will focus on a different letter. The letters will not be introduced in alphabetical order but instead in an order of familiarity of sound and shape. Children that are already familiar with the letters of the alphabet will increase their knowledge of letter sounds and word connections as well as work on proper formation of letters when writing.Through this curriculum children will:
*Identify names of letters of the alphabet
*Associate names of letters with their shapes
 *Form capital and lowercase letters
*Recognize and name beginning letters in familiar words
*Associate letters with the sound it most commonly represents
The activities will vary each week but will include read aloud stories begining with the letter of the week, practice writing the letter of the week, creating a class word list for the letter of the week and more. You can help at home by pointing out words and familiar items that begin with the letter of the week. Each month I will post the letter and week we will be focusing on that letter. I will also include the "Letter Talk" (how to write the letters) that we will use in class, if you would like to reinforce this skill at home.

You may have noticed our Marvelous Me! display in the classroom. It has displayed information about some of Mrs. Shaw's favorites. In December this display will change weekly so that each child will have an opportunity to tell us more about themselves. The display may inlude written words (by your child, by a parent or written together - parent & child), photographs, drawings, images printed from the internet and or pictures cut out from magazines.

Here is a list of categories covered in our Marvelous Me display as well as suggestions of what to bring in:
* My Name - your child may write his/her name with or without help on any piece of paper
* My Birthday - you may write the date out, use clip art, cut out letters and numbers to make month and date, etc.
* My Family - draw a picture, write a list of name, bring a photograph, etc.
* My Favorite Food - draw a picture, write the name of the food, print an internet image, cut a picture from a magazine, etc.

Please help your child get the items ready to bring in on the date noted. A reminder will be sent the week before to help you and your child prepare for their week. Each child will have an opportunity during the week to tell about the items posted for their display. All items brought in will be returned at the end of the week.
