Learning Plan
- Tomorrow we will distribute a packet with two weeks of Daily Activities. Each day has a theme and includes six activities to match the theme using items families are likely to already have at home. Daily activities include Reading, Letters & Sounds, Math, Fine Motor, Art or Sensory, and STEM or Gross Motor. Also included with the packet are
- Home Writing Journal
- Letter Cards
- Number Cards with Ten Frames
- Letter Tracing Worksheets
- Number Tracing Worksheet
- Ten Frame Math Mat
- We will also provide a list of a few early childhood appropriate apps students may want to interact with at home.
- We will send a daily email to parents with an additional "new" activity for the day and add 1 or 2 new apps to the list of apps
- I encourage you to email me pictures of the work your Froggy has completed on a daily basis. I will respond and offer more ideas as needed.
- Above all I encourage you to make some time to play alongside your preschooler and read together everyday. Play is the work of childhood. This is a high anxiety time for all of us and preschoolers have an innate ability to make us laugh with their words and actions if we get involved in their play.
- Please reach out to me if you need any kind of help. If you are struggling with meals, housing, internet access, anxiety or anything I will be available via email and will do whatever I can to help. Don't be afraid to ask questions or ask for more ideas if your Froggy is going stir crazy.
Homework
The Froggies are really growing as readers. They know many sounds and are beginning to sound out words. It will be most helpful to your child as a budding reader if they have an opportunity to practice every night for just a few minutes. Ask your child to sound out the words on the worksheet he/she completed in class. This is on the Leave at Home side of their folder.
In class we use these phrases to practice reading:
"sound it out" - your child slides his/her finger under each sound and says the sound aloud
"say it fast" - your child blends the sounds he/she just made and says the word
Be sure to have your child point/slide his/her finger under the letters as they read. This helps your Froggy connect the sounds with the letters and reinforces the direction we read (left to right). If your child struggles to "say it fast" take time to sound it out slowly again, then sound it out a little faster, then try say it fast again.
Listen to your child read any words on his/her homework page as well. If your child is in the after school program he/she completes the worksheet during the group homework time but will benefit from reading one on one to you at home each night.
Please also remove papers from the Leave at Home side of their folder daily. It is sometimes hard for your Froggy to manage his/her folder if it has extra papers in it.

HELPER OF THE DAY
Everyone in preschool loves to be a helper. In order to be sure everyone gets an equal chance at helping, we have a HELPER OF THE DAY. This is one child that does a variety of classroom tasks such as:
* morning meeting helper (directs the class in a daily Nursery Rhyme, counts students, passes out items as needed)
* line leader
* door holder
* first aid bag carrier (we always take one when we go outside)
* any other tasks that need help during the day - passing things out, pushing in chairs, etc.
You will notice that the helper of the day is selected in alphabetical order by first names. The children quickly learn to figure out when their turn is coming by studying the names hanging on the glass wall (where Pete the Cat is now). It is very exciting to be "THE HELPER."
Birthday Celebrations
Birthdays are very exciting for preschoolers. We will celebrate your child's birthday in class by singing and making cards. Children may not bring edible treats to eat at school. Many children like celebrate with their school friends by bringing a small trinket or goodie. If you would like to send a treat for your child's birthday we have 16 students. Feel free to join us for lunch is you can. If your child has a summer birthday and you would like to celebrate before the school year ends we can arrange a date, just talk to Mrs. Shaw. If your child's birthday falls on a weekend day please let us know if you want to celebrate on the Friday or Monday so we will be prepared. We are looking forward to many fun celebrations.
